I'd like to go beyond the box... With my MacBook pro I can show the world that there are more choices to an OS than just Windows or Macintosh. With my macbook pro I will show the world what linux can accomplish on the high-end hardware you only get from Apple. Mac is a step in the right direction (i.e. away from Windows), yet so few people know there is an evolution beyond Macs as well to a world of a free (cost as well as open source code) OS.

The link I am providing is what I've currently gotten my linux setup to look like on my current laptop. Imagine the degrees I could take this to by unleashing the power and stability of a Macbook Pro to handle even more eye candy than my current one can handle.

Promote linux, let the world know they have a CHOICE, and aren't locked in to simply Windows or Macintosh.

Taking Notes & Thinking aloud....

1. If I am provided with a Macbook pro by a TV host such as Ellen or Oprah:
A.)I'd be willing to appear on the show for a demonstration (be it a live guest or if they send a camera crew to film a short segment of me)
B.)I'd want to configure a second Macbook Pro to present to the host of the show for their casual use. I would configure the Macbook Pro with Linux with a look to compliment the host. Desktop wallpaper(s) of the host, the host with a favorite guest, the skyline of the host's favorite city. One Idea was having an animated desktop of Ellen dancing. In any event something that would appeal to the host.

2.I wish to inform the general public the benefits of linux:
A. No cost, it's free to download and burn to CD/DVD then install.
B. The majority of software is free to install as well.
C. The ease of upgrading, Not only do system updates update the core system, they also update every program on your computer as well, This includes web browsers, instant messing clients, e-mail clients, games, office suite software.
C. Linux is not susceptible to viruses the way Windows (and to a much lesser extent Macintosh) is.
D. Linux is just as easy to use as Macintosh or Windows. In fact for someone who has NEVER used a computer before Linux may actually be easier to learn than Windows or Mac.

3.I want to show the public that Linux is on par application-wise with Winowds and Mac by showing the following FREE programs:
A.Firefox Web Browser, doing media intensive sites like: youtube, hulu, pandora, facebook, myspace, g-mail, etc.
B.Pidgin and Skype messenger clients. Perhaps aMSN just to show how much it looks like it's windows counterpart. as a free alternative to MS Office. Writer, Spreadsheet, presentation (Word, XL, Powerpoint),
D. Time permitting, media-only apps like vlc media player, audacity audio editor, Gimp (free linux alternative to Photoshop).

4. When I get my Macbook Pro the first thing I want to do on-camera with it is to have it running Linux with a THEME that makes it look exactly like a Mac. With a few clicks I will then change the THEME to look exactly like Windows 7. Finally I will change the theme to one of my own liking, one I feel is superior to Windows and Mac. The reason for this. I want to start off with the computer looking like a Mac on the outside as well as the inside. Then make it look like windows to confound, confuse, astonish the audience. Then as I change to my linux theme, explain that I am not using Mac OSX, I am not using Windows 7. I am using something better, Linux, that can emulate the look and feel of either, as well as add new features that surpass Windows and Mac.

5. If the host of the show wants to add in that I tinker with linux to help alleviate and overcome the symptoms of my mental illness I'm ok with that. I'm also fine with no mention of it whatsoever.

6.Networking...specifically contacting Ellen.Oprah, Apple, etc. I'm quite new here and I am really hoping Brileigh has some connections to those people/organizations, or knows someone that does. I'm fine with someone making contact on my behalf or by passing the contact's information on to me and contacting them myself.

any suggestions from the members of this group on my idea?

A Macbook Pro would put me within reach of self sufficiency. I am so creative and I'm trained in so many things I can make a way for myself. I'm just 1 excellent computer away from being a fully functioning, self supporting artist. I will give online lessons, I could do my music lesson and weaving blog every day as opposed to the 20 min spurts you get at the library. I could post my resumes, keep up with opportunities online, post examples of my textiles work, and upload my music for sale. Income from these sources would stop the negative spiral in my brand new business account, stop them from putting me on welfare, allow me to paly my rent on time so the management company I pay to can keep better records and stop making me pay twice for things and stop trying to evict me.

This computer would allow me to market my skills and show that I am up to speed with the market place. I would be able to stay in practice and up to date with new, exciting technology!

My creative spirit is alive! It deserves a chance! A REAL chance and I'm standing up for it!

I can stop using my phone as a computer too.
Comment by Shaman Kanowa on February 27, 2011 at 12:17am New MacBook pro model line is coming out soon with better graphics cards for those who care. Steam now supports OS X with many great games available.

Jason: Pretty interesting idea of putting Linux on there. My personal use of Linux was limited to one college project where I had to make sure it worked on multiple OSes, so it's been about 7 years since I have used it. That's great that you are so passionate about it, but you may as well dual boot it to keep OS X on there, or maybe use something like VMWare Fusion to have it running in a VM.
