So here it is: another day of fasting; but today is for the wedded woman, whereby she fasts for her husband's long life and good health. It requires the strict discipline of abstaining from water, and type of food until the moon is seen in the evening. There is a prayer and a story that is heard about why and how this ritual began; after which an earthen lamp is lit for the rest of the evening and once the moon is visible, the woman breaks her fast with prayer to the moon (you cannot look directly at it, a screen or a sieve is used to see it). Food is rice, black lentils, sweet Indian dish, coconut, and of course my favorite: WATER !!!! If this interests you or you would like a more detailed understanding of this festival you can google it under the name of "karva chauth".
